Weeks of Harm: Trump, Musk, and GOP Actions
What has happened in the last week that Trump, Musk or the Republican controlled Congress have done to harm the American people? I am going to start with comments from Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, March 15, 2025 (RepLizzieFletcherTX07@mail.house.gov), since she provides clarity to what happens weekly.
“Top of mind this week: tariffs, trade, and tumbling stock market. President Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, raising the overall tax to 50 percent. Trump reversed course after Ontario Premier Doug Ford agreed to suspend Canada’s 25 percent tariff on electricity exported to the United States. The stock market appears to be reacting to the financial uncertainty of the administration’s next actions and the response.
Developments at the Department of Education. As you may have seen, employees at the Department of Education received a notice instructing them to leave the building by 6 p.m. and approximately half of the employees—more than 1,300—received termination notices. I cosponsored the Protect the Department of Education Act to prohibit the use of appropriated funding to decentralize, reduce the staffing, or alter the responsibilities, authority, or functionality of the Department of Education. The steps the Trump Administration is taking, like many of President Trump’s executive actions, are causing chaos for our students, families, teachers, and schools across the country. Instead, House Republicans brought a 100-page bill to the House floor that did not simply continue funding the programs at the current spending levels (which is what a continuing resolution actually is), but instead reduces funding for critical government programs and projects that people rely on. For example, it:
∙Cuts $280 million in funding for the National Institutes of Health, jeopardizing jobs and medical research conducted in Houston related to cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and more;
∙Cuts Army Corps of Engineers construction projects by $1.4 billion or 44 percent, which could include the Buffalo Bayou Tributaries Resiliency Study and the Houston Ship Channel Expansion (Project 11);
∙Strips Congress of the authority to determine Army Corps project funding levels and instead gives the Trump administration discretion to fund projects;
∙Fails to fund the Disaster Relief Fund, which is already in need of additional funding to assist with future disasters; and
∙Cuts $40 million in election security grants despite House Republicans falsely claiming for years about stolen elections and voter fraud.
At a time when people across Texas’ Seventh Congressional District are concerned about the Trump administration’s cuts to government programs they depend on, this spending bill makes things worse. It gives Elon Musk and President Trump an unprecedented level of discretion to make more spending cuts to health care, infrastructure, public safety, and more. House Republicans’ bill cedes
the authority of Congress and undermines the checks and balances that are necessary to our democratic system. For these reasons, I voted no on the spending resolution.” If you want the truth about what is happening in Congress, then get on Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher’s RepLizzieFletcherTX07@mail.house.gov) email and learn each week what has happened. She stands on the things that matter to all the Americans who realize what is going on.
One of the ways I can cover more articles is to have you use the headlines and get more information about the headlines you are most interested in. I will provide the headline list in my podcast blog. Articles that I provide more detail will have the links or newsletter connections where they come from.
∙“Judge Orders Thousands of Federal Workers Reinstated”—The judge ordered six federal agencies to rehire the probationary workers, calling the Trump administration’s justification for firing them a ‘sham.’
∙“U.S Stocks Have Worst Day of 2025 (March 10) as Economic Fears Grow”—In March we have had three occurrences of the market crashing.
∙“How Trump’s second term might affect the market and your finances”—This describes the misconceptions that stock market experts made about Trump. They thought there would be lowering of taxes and deregulation. They missed what Trump would focus on such as tariffs and punishing people. Face the facts that stock prices tend to rise when companies expect higher profitability and fall when uncertainty impact the economy. I am going to give a clearer description from wall street after headlines.
∙“Trump Administration Deports hundreds of Immigrants Even as a Judge Orders Their Removals Stopped.”—U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg verbally ordered the planes to be turned around and they were not. Professors of law Centers say that Boasberg’s verbal directive to turn around the planes was not a part of the order but that the Trump administration clearly violated the “spirit of it.” This will require judges to be very directive in their written orders. Using an 18th century wartime declaration is not acceptable. Salvadoran President is making $6 million for housing 300 immigrants in his prison. Trump and Republicans are not law and order they have no respect for the law.
∙”How Trump’s Hard-Line Tactics Are Driving Down Migration”—Building on Biden-era policies, President Trump is strong-arming regional leaders, deploying military force and shredding decades of precedents when it comes to the U.S.-Mexico border. There is no longer an established policy for immigrants to come to the U.S. One of the mistakes that I believe the Democratic party did was not emphasize the later stages of Biden’s immigration program that worked to curtail large migration. The hateful, harsh, and force that is being used by Trump is outrageous. Biden’s immigration plan was built on collaboration with South American countries supporting the decrease of migration.
∙“Trump Orders Gutting of 7 Agencies, Including Voice of America’s Parent”—The order targeting the agencies, largely obscure entities that appeared to test the bounds of the president’s power and authority.
∙“U.S. to expel South African ambassador”—Rubio called the South African ambassador a “race-baiting politician who hates America” and said, “he is no longer welcome.” The reason the ambassador was expelled is he gave a speech in Johannesburg at a think tank which he said, “Trump was ‘mobilizing’ white supremacy in the United States and ‘abroad as well.’” Many comments about this article criticize Rubio and they support the ambassador and think he was speaking the truth about President Trump mobilizing white supremacy.
∙“The Trump Backers Who Have Buyer’s Remorse”—With every new policy and offhand remark, Trump belies the imagery versions of himself that inspired many of his supporters. The last comment in this article is that many of his followers realize he is not the Donald Trump they voted for. They voted against the left and many of the things that the left stand for. “ In 2024, Trump benefited from this dynamic. But come the 2026 midterms, he will have provided voters, who have been burned by their illusions, with something new to vote against. The problem with running as the candidate of people’s dreams is that, eventually, they wake up.”
I feel appalled that Rubio and other Trump supporters cannot pay attention to actions by Trump, Musk, and Vance that go to Europe and make comments on X that support white and male supremacy and domination. For example, Arlington Cemetery website has taken down ways to search for all women or person of color that died serving our country. You cannot search and find their names. Only white males are available in the search. People are not paying attention to the 1000s of ways that Trump is changing our experiences in America. Trump, Musk and Republicans are creating an America that we have never experienced—a country without a meaningful government that serves the American people.
∙“The big Government Contracts DOGE Hasn’t Touched”—By not targeting major sources of spending of the defense, the group has had a minimal impact on the federal budget so far but a big effect on many small companies.”—“Elon Musk and his team of budget cutters have claimed credit for billions of dollars in canceled government contracts. But their initiative, the Department of Government Efficiency, has so far barely touched the biggest contract spending in the federal budget.” There is over 200 Billion of the 10 largest contractors and Musk is one of them.
∙“How Trump is reshaping reality by hiding data”—He is curating reality, which is an old political game, but Trump’s sweeping statistical purges are part of a broader attempt to reinvent the “the truth.”—This article gives pictures and examples of what he is doing. By eliminating data on websites he can spin the facts, cherry-pick and creates his ‘truth’ through repetition. They name these tricks that Trump is using—1. Incorrect data, 2. Misrepresented data, and 3. Altered data.
Analyzing the Economic Impact of Trump’s Policies
One of the brief and yet best article I have read about Trump and Musk’s actions that are destroying the economy was in The Washington Post, March 13, 2025, by Catherine Rampell, “Wall Street is simply flabbergasted that Trump is wrecking the economy.” “Who could have guessed this would happen?”
“Wall Street is apparently shocked that President Donald Trump is destroying the robust economy he inherited. All those self-defeating tariffs! Those arbitrary federal layoffs! Stripping work permits from legal immigrants! The self-dealing! The dismantling of the rule of law!
‘With hindsight, we did not appreciate the nature of what the administration was going to be like,’ a remorseful banker told the Financial Times, to cite just one representative quote. ‘I do believe they are hurting their stated objectives of peace and prosperity.’
Trump’s close allies and advisers are similarly ‘rattled,’ ‘spooked’ and ‘unnerved’ by the president’s destructive decisions, the Wall Street Journal reports. Were any of these people watching the same campaign the rest of the country saw?
Trump’s personnel choices have prioritized personal loyalty over sound judgment or respect for the law. The few “adults in the room” — the Cabinet appointees whom markets might have once trusted — have proved spineless, powerless or both. Recall that one of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s first official acts was allowing Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service to infiltrate the sensitive federal payments system. Bessent also repeatedly misrepresented how much access the DOGE bros had.
Rampell says, “To be clear, I do not blame regular, everyday voters for not fully anticipating these outcomes. News organizations have profiled regretful Trump voters who (wrongly) believed he’d lower prices, make fertility care free or crack down on migrant gangbangers — and who are only now realizing just how much they or their families have to lose. Social media greets these stories with leopards-eating-faces memes.
But C-suite executives and market analysts have no excuses for getting Trump’s economic agenda wrong. They are paid to make accurate predictions and to follow incremental regulatory and legislative developments. They were supposed to know that the “Tariff Man” might raise tariffs, and that the guardrails were being dismantled. They went into this eyes-wide-open.”
Forbe’s, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and many other news resources have multiple articles on how CEOs are confused by Trump trade war and have deepening economic unease and concerns. They do not like the policies that are being implemented.
Organizations That Fight Against Trump, Musk, and the GOP
3.14 Action Fund: Science and Facts Against Corruption (,info@e.314actionfund.org>) has clear data and facts. In their March 9, 2025, Sunday newsletter, “Do you think DOGE should be dissolved?” They describe the humiliating week for DOGE: 1. “DOGE accidentally revealed the location of a classified secret nation security complex and 13 sensitive sites; 2. Admitted to lying about 1,000 cases of so-called wasteful spending and had to issue 1,000 corrections; 3. Fired nuclear safety, air traffic safety, wildfire response, and bird flu experts (and is now scrambling to rehire them); 4. Received backlash for trying to close FIFTY Social Security offices with a team of child interns (some of which are only teenagers); 5. Was exposed for plotting the biggest cut to the VA and medical research in modern history; 6. And is under fire for claiming Elon Musk is and isn’t the head of DOGE and is and isn’t a member of the department (this ambiguity gives him legal cover and allows him to not need to comply with ethics or conflict of interest laws). And on March 13th newsletter they added 7. Two judges just ruled that thousands of federal employees were fired ILLEGALLY and must be rehired whilst also demanding the release of documents due to the ‘unprecedented’ abuse of power and ‘unusual secrecy’ of the department.” 3.14 Action Fund supports the elections of scientist and medical personal to run for political office. They have great stories of short and yet thoughtful comments about Dr. Kim Schrier, a pediatrician in Congress, Mark Kelly, the only astronaut in Congress, George Whiteside, who is the former Chief of Staff for NASA who flipped a GOP seat, and Janelle Bynum, who is an engineer who flipped a GOP seat to blue.
Public Citizen: Exposing the GOP’s Attack on Global Health (president@citizen.org) has an excellent newsletter out on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, 11:37 AM on the details of what they call Slashing USAID’s global health funding is an outright betrayal of America’s role in saving lives around the world. I provided the number of lawsuits they are fighting about this action of Trump, and Musk’s DOGE. They named UNICEP polio vaccines to millions of children was eliminated, a contract for malaria and other treatments to 53 million people, a project in the Congo that provides the only source of water for 250,000 people, HIV treatment projects for medication to people in Lesotho, Tanzania, and Eswatini, 87 women’s shelters in South Africa for 33,000 survivors of rape and domestic violence, and food for malnourished pregnant women in Bangladesh. A judge ruled against Trump’s administration and yet Rubio had cancelled many of the contracts. Despite the judge’s ruling the vast majority of U.S humanitarian programs are, for now, stripped of funding. Public Citizen is asking you and me to call our members of Congress and “Demand that the Trump Administration reverse devastating cuts and restore Congressionally approved global health funding. Speak out in support of USAID and America’s important humanitarian work.”
ACS: Defending Democracy and the Rule of Law—http://www.acslaw.org/about-us/.–The American Constitution Society is “the nation’s foremost progressive legal organization, with a diverse nationwide network that includes nearly 200 student and lawyer chapters, and progressive lawyers, students, judges, scholars, elected officials, and advocates.” They say, “Our mission is to support and advocate for laws and legal systems that redress the founding failures of our Constitution, strengthen our democratic legitimacy, uphold the rule of law, and realize the promise of equality for all, including people of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and other historically excluded communities.” They represent democracy in the judiciary by vindicating “fundamental freedoms, protect democratic guardrails, uphold the rule of law, and interpret the U.S. Constitution through the lens of history and lived experiences.” They advance equity and justice, uphold the rule of law, and guard against the abuse of power,” and they are a “robust and diverse legal civil society that actively promotes progressive legal transformation and redress of the founding failures of our Constitution and of our laws and legal system.” You will easily find their website at http://www.acslaw.org/about-us/. Their newsletter is particularly important to you to subscribe to (<ACS Weekly info@acslaw.org). This is a powerful article that was produced on February 26, 2025, “We Believe We Are in a Constitutional Crisis: Law Professors and Law Teachers Stand Against Administration’s Illegal and Unconstitutional Actions.” There are 1019 names that I counted on this list of Law professors and teachers that support the statements in this paper. Their podcast, zoom and in-person programs are outstanding and highly informative. They uphold the Constitution of the United States, and they stand on the rule of law.
National Democratic Redistricting Committee— democraticredistricting.com–I have provided a description of them in podcast 123. Again, You need to be on their newsletter (<info@democraticredistricting.com>). On March 15, 2025, they had short and clarifying comments on the failure of the Republican Congress to protect U.S. citizens and describe the efforts throughout the country of Republicans making every effort to use gerrymandering to create inappropriate maps for state and federal legislations. They could use your help right now, since Musk is spending millions to elect a judge that supports gerrymandering and will be a real destruction to the Supreme Court in Wisconsin. You can contact them through the email I have given you. They fight for honest and fair redistricting, and we have a census coming up. I have told you about Republicans wanting to eliminate large groups of people from the census so they can control our country.
Bright America- Substack—www.brightamerica.org–This is a non-profit grassroots movement open to all and built, by conservative and moderate leaders defending the Constitution, fighting corruption, and casting a brighter vision for the future of our country. They are not a new party. They are focused on standing up to any effort that threatens the foundation of “American democracy: the Constitution, rule of law, separation of powers, and our institutions.” They are focused on three things: 1. “Fueling 150+ lawsuits at the state and federal level challenging acti-democratic action—including a lawsuit against Elon Musk & DOGE; 2. Meeting people where they are—both online and off—to equip them to influence their legislators and begin shifting the culture of our communities and media. When massive numbers care enough to do something, leaders take notice; 3. Working with brilliant minds and harnessing the power of AI to reach and influence disengaged Americans—testing, learning, perfecting, and repeating messaging that breaks through in time for the future. Go to their website and read about their lawsuit. They say, “No unelected billionaire should have the power to override democracy.”
Mother Jones— www.motherjones.com > politics–How the GOP Lost Its Mind—https://www.motherjones.com/–they are smart journalist that are bold, courageous and their articles are amazing. They have award-winning photojournalist, journalist, and stunning videos. They have fearless conversations. Mother Jones is “independent of the media conglomerates that own most of what passes for ‘news.’ We stay independent because people like you and me subscribe to Mother Jones. In 2024 they were named Magazine of the Year by their peers in the industry. For magazines, that’s like an Oscar for Best Picture. They were started in 1976, and they have been open for 48 years. What you are missing in your news you will find in Mother Jones. I like Senator Elizabeth Warren’s statement about them, “For 40 years the pages of Mother Jones have been home to smart, aggressive journalism that shines a light on some of the most significant issues facing our country.” The facts and data I get from them enlightens me, and I know Mother Jones will do that for you.
For those of us that live in Texas, I must not leave out Texas Civil Rights Project—https://www.txcivilrights.org/our-work “TCRP is a non-profit organization that protects and advances the civil rights of vulnerable populations in Texas through legal advocacy and litigation. They remain committed to representing those persons and groups that have been historically targeted in Texas–including immigrants, people of color, the poor, persons with disabilities, persons accused of crimes, and others. We will use the law as a sword and shield against abuse, discrimination, disenfranchisement and other injustices, demanding accountability from those in power. We are uniquely homegrown and rooted in Texas. That means we are not tethered to any national bureaucracy and entirely focused on advancing equality and justice in our own backyards.” Currently they are suing the Trump administration for one of his executive orders that suspends asylum entirely. “This directive is extreme, unjust, and unlawful. Our lawsuit challenges this policy, which denies vulnerable families safety, strains communities and undermines U.S. values.” “We are fighting to keep immigrants from being detained in Guantanamo Bay.” They have filed a legal challenge for unlawful detention of a detained individual from Venezuela with no criminal history.” The lawsuit addresses the human rights abuses this man has experienced.
Conclusion: A Call to Action for Our Democracy
This is not the country I grew up in, nor the one I want for anyone—citizen or not—to endure such devastation and harm. We cannot afford to tune out, no matter how exhausted we feel. Our country needs us now more than ever.
The judicial branch is pushing back through lawsuits, but it’s not enough. Previous generations fought tirelessly to preserve our democracy, and now it’s our turn. We must stand up, speak out, and demand an end to the destruction caused by Trump, Musk, and the MAGA-controlled Congress. The fight for
2026 starts now—we need to remove extremist Republicans from power and hold every elected official accountable. I take action every day: writing and calling my two MAGA Republican senators, tracking their votes, attending town hall meetings, and stay informed through Lizzie Fletcher’s reports.
I engage with Democratic groups, discuss these issues with Republican and Democratic friends who are equally alarmed, and research and write my podcast, Hot Topic Bold Talk, alongside my blog.
Through this work, I find balance—I fight for democracy while making time for family, friends, and the life I cherish. This is how we resist. This is how we win.
